New WhatsApp update gives users more control over group chats

New WhatsApp update gives users more control over group chats

As announced in a blog post today, WhatsApp has updated its privacy settings to include more options for its users. Previously, anyone with a user's phone number could add them in groups on the application. All that changes with this new update, as the newly introduced options will allow users to choose whether to grant strangers permission to add them in group chats or not.
Once WhatsApp users are updated to the latest version of the app, they will be able to select from one of three options concerning group chat privacy settings - 'everyone', 'my contacts' and 'my contacts except'. The options are self-explanatory and decide who is allowed to add the user to a WhatsApp group.
As for those who are restricted from adding the user to a group, they will have the option to send an invite to the group as a private message as long as they hold the admin position. The invite also expires after three days.
Facebook's texting app provided detailed instructions for WhatsApp users to assist them in utilizing the new privacy features. Here are the steps as provided by the social media giant:
To enable it, go to Settings in your app, then tap Account > Privacy > Groups and select one of three options: “Everyone,” “My Contacts,” or “My Contacts Except.” “My Contacts” means only users you have in your address book can add you to groups and “My Contacts Except” provides additional control for who among your contacts can add you to a group.
According to WhatsApp, some users may have already started receiving the new update as it rolls out starting today. Meanwhile, the worldwide rollout is scheduled to occur over the course of the next few days.
